Genetics and Ethics

Like most veterinary dental specialists, Dr. Beebe believes all pets are entitled to a comfortable, functional bite, but not necessarily a normal bite. It is important to recognize that the correction of orthodontic abnormalities in animals has moral, ethical, and legal implications. Because many malocclusions are inherited, animals with orthodontic problems that may be inherited should not be used for breeding purposes. In general, the same pairing that resulted in the pet with the malocclusion should be avoided once again. Dr. Beebe recommends genetic counseling prior to orthodontic treatment and does not believe in procedures for purely cosmetic reasons.
